Are you finding it hard to concentrate at work due to ADHD? Today we are featuring a guest blog post from Jane Sandwood with 3 simple tips to stay more focused at work when dealing with ADHD.

How to Improve Concentration at Work When You Have ADHD

Does it take you a long time to complete tasks at work? Do you often find yourself staring off into the distance before you realize you are supposed to be doing something? If so, you may be struggling to concentrate at work due to ADHD. This can be frustrating and stressful, but don’t worry; there are ways to improve concentration so you can use your strengths to make work a happier place.

It can be difficult for people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to stay on top of their work, and this isn’t a problem that only affects a few people; around 4% of adults meet the official diagnostic criteria for ADHD, and around 16% of adults meet some of the criteria. Another issue is that nearly 90% of adults with ADHD are not aware that they have the condition, but it is causing them to struggle at work.

If you think that ADHD is affecting your concentration, here are three handy ways to improve your concentration at work.

Pay attention to your work space

One of the best ways to improve concentration at work when you have ADHD is to make sure that your work space is clean and tidy, as clutter can be extremely distracting. Remove old papers and rubbish, and remove unnecessary distracting items like your personal phone. After all, if you are in an organized, productive workspace you are more likely to be organized and productive yourself.

Break tasks down

If a task seems difficult and overwhelming, you are more likely to become stressed and distracted, so try breaking big tasks down into smaller tasks. For instance, if you have to write a report you can break it down; each task is simply writing a paragraph or a sentence. You could also try breaking the working day down into hour long chunks to make it feel shorter and less overwhelming. This will make the tasks seem much more manageable, so it will be easier for you to stay on track.

Limit other distractions

Constant voicemails and emails can make it hard to stay focused on the important tasks as they offer up frequent small distractions that can easily derail you. Thankfully you can limit these distractions by setting aside times of the day to respond to them. For instance, you could respond to all your emails in the last half an hour before you finish work.

It can be difficult to concentrate at work when you have ADHD, but there are lots of ways to help, from limiting distractions to breaking tasks down. If this doesn’t help you may want to consider counselling sessions to help make your working life more pleasant.
