Understand Your Therapy Goals
It's not always easy to do when in crisis, but the best first step is to consider what you want to accomplish in your therapy sessions. You may simply want to feel less stressed or depressed. Review Credentials and Demographics
Conduct research into counselors on your list to find out where they went to school and double-check their licensing status. You may want to see if they have received any awards or other honors and whether they have authored research papers in their field.
No single credential means that you've found the perfect therapist. However, it helps to know that your chosen professional has a good reputation with peers and stays current with the latest methodologies. You may also want to consider if you feel most comfortable with someone of the same or opposite gender or near your age.
A therapist's written biography can only tell you so much. As you begin your relationship, it's wise to ask some friendly questions to get a feel for the person. If your therapist seems to object to being questioned, it might be a sign that they are not a good match. Better to know that before your relationship begins.
