When there is a gap between something we want and something we’ve got, we can experience a wide variety of painful emotions. A big emotion that often comes up to the surface is fear.
Too commonly, we run away from fear, getting lost in work, food, TV, internet (or phone checking), other’s needs, or distracting thoughts and emotions such as “I’m too this or that.”
Our emotions are actually a gift that our body gives us to let us know that there’s something important worth paying attention to. Though it may feel uncomfortable at first, recognizing, labeling and feeling them can help dissipate their intensity. Getting clarity about what we are afraid of can be a good first step as it is usually what is “on top” of our deepest emotions.
