About Lizz Calderon-Mullens

“There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t” -John Green.
Change and growth take time, and I feel that being a therapist is a privilege. Having the honor and privilege to be part of a person’s journey towards improved mental health and increased understanding of themselves, is incredible. I would be honored for the opportunity to go through this therapeutic process with you, assist with identifying what you want to change in your life, identifying the skills and tools that are within you, and build your inner strengths that will allow you to live a healthier life and continue to grow.
Personally, I understand how challenging it is to feel overwhelmed by anxiety, feel as if life’s challenges are too difficult to overcome, and to feel hopeless. I believe that my own life experiences, as well as my passion for others and my passion towards learning and growing, helps to develop and build deep connections, trust and empathy within the therapeutic relationship.

Lizz's Focus

I work with children, teens and young adults from a perspective that acknowledges the tremendous impact family has on people’s emotions and relationship patterns. I believe my experience on the family team at a large, non-profit counseling center has helped prepare me to appreciate all the moving parts of a family.

Additionally, I have training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, an evidence based treatment modality that addresses self and relationship destructive behavior and difficulties with emotional regulation in adolescents and adults. I also integrate art and sand tray approaches and activities, and with younger clients I integrate Theraplay and play approaches and activities throughout the therapeutic process.

I especially enjoy providing therapy for adolescents and young adults struggling with anxiety, helping them overcome these often debilitating problems using scientifically proven treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). With teens and young adults, I aim to create a safe and relaxed atmosphere in which they feel comfortable sharing their struggles, and are encouraged to make changes that lead to healthier living.

Helping those who are wrestling with spiritual issues – questioning the faith they grew up with or trying to solidify a belief system or spiritual practice that is meaningful for them and reconciles with the way they have come to know themselves, others, and the world. Continuing to strive to meet clients where they are and actively work on key issues that they face, clients may choose to incorporate spirituality and prayer into the time together at their desired level.

Lizz's Other Specialities

I approach therapy with the focus of you, the client and I utilize several different approaches and techniques that include Cognitive Behavior therapy, Adlerian therapy and Person-Centered therapy, as well as utilizing Theraplay techniques, to meet each client at their unique individual and specific needs.

With each client, as their therapist, I aim to create a safe space that helps foster support and growth, and I utilize active listening, empathy and genuineness as I strive to meet clients where they are and actively work on key issues that they face. Each client is unique, along with their experiences and life narratives, and as the client knows themselves best, therapeutic goals are mutually agreed upon by both the client and counselor, and together we develop a plan to achieve these goals.

History And Qualifications

I previously worked in Katy ISD in the Special Education Department, at the PPCD level and volunteered at my church in their special needs ministry for close to 3 years. I also have the experience of co-facilitating Divorce Care for Kids, which is a support group that is a safe, fun place where children can learn skills that will help them heal and process through the family’s divorce.

I have been trained in Theraplay, which aims at helping parents and children build relationships through attachment based play. I have a strong passion for suicide awareness and prevention, from personal experiences and to assist any individual through this process.

As I began my practicum in 2017, I was on the Family Team at a large non profit counseling center, and there we discussed and became familial with sand tray techniques, how to help and work with foster/adopt families and children, families with children with special needs and families and children going through divorce or separation
