About Diana Cabrera-Stewart

She/Her/Hers

Are you struggling to find joy and meaning in your role as a mother? Do you feel like your only value is in what you provide for your family? Are you feeling guilty because you don’t feel excited about and connected to your baby during pregnancy, or do you worry about bonding with your adopted child? Are you struggling with the idea that your family will never look how you hoped because of fertility issues, parenting children with disabilities, or difficulty finding a suitable partner? Are you finding it difficult to get up and face the day without the weight of cultural, societal, family, and even your own expectations dragging you down? Do you smile and fight back tears whenever someone looks you in the eye and genuinely asks, “How are you?” If you answered yes to any of these questions, believe me when I say that you are not alone!

Diana's Focus

Especially for Mothers

Being a mom in today’s world of Pinterest and Instagram can be incredibly stressful, especially for those of us who do not live near or have the support of our own families or other primary support systems. We can’t help but compare ourselves to others’ picture-perfect highlight reels while we are mired in the day-to-day of messy, smelly, sometimes chaotic real life as a mother. Reality is seldom like we imagined it would be, is it? It doesn’t have to be like this. Let me show you a different way. As a clinician, I have helped many women through unique but similar struggles. I have specific training in the treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and welcome every opportunity to positively impact the lives of mothers and, by extension, their families.

Trauma Work

Have you been a victim of sexual assault, violence, or emotional or verbal abuse? Have you experienced a traumatic event, big or small, that has sent you into an emotional tailspin or otherwise derailed you? Has a tragic loss or close call left you feeling keyed up and on edge, always fearing the worst will happen to you or your loved ones?

As a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, I can help you learn to manage the symptoms associated with painful past events so that you can move forward in your life. I am also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Brainspotting, two gentle body-based approaches that provide deeper, more rapid, and longer-lasting healing than talk therapy alone.

Diana's Other Specialities

In addition to mothers, I enjoy working with clients on all issues unique to the experiences of women in our world. These issues include but are not limited to gender discrimination at work, navigating gender roles at home, balancing competing demands of femininity and success, perfectionism, body image concerns, expectations about caring for aging parents, navigating relationships, moving past society’s ‘shoulds’ and ‘oughts,’ and overcoming codependence. I also enjoy working with all clients for whom race, culture, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender expression, and other differences lead to questions of identity and belonging. More generally, I have helped many clients break past the anxiety and depression that have held them back from engaging fully with their lives. I have worked in a broad range of settings and addressed a wide variety of challenges with people from many cultures and in almost every stage of life. I truly consider it an honor to be invited to share in someone’s journey and to walk alongside them as they discover their potential and grow to become their best selves.

My Approach

When we meet, I will help you uncover your strengths and resources–the things that will help you as you work on overcoming your challenges. No two people are exactly alike, and I will honor your unique experiences and collaborate with you to develop goals and to create an individualized plan to work toward those goals. My goal is to nurture and support you as you become the person you long to be. I believe that you have within you the tools and resources to heal and to be your best self. I see my role as a support, guide, and facilitator to provide a safe place where you can share and process your thoughts and feelings and where I can help you uncover and utilize the tools that you already possess. I will also teach you new behaviors, skills, practices, and thoughts that have helped others in similar situations (we call these ‘evidence-based practices,’ because research has shown them to be beneficial). Between sessions, I often suggest ‘homework,’ which generally involves trying a new way of thinking or a new approach to a problem or situation that you have not yet resolved. Throughout the therapy process, we will openly discuss what is working and what is not working so that our time together can be productive and meaningful for you.
