Houston is a beautiful city with plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors. One activity that can help you destress and unwind from busy city life is outdoor yoga. Yoga is an amazing grounding exercise that is beneficial to your physical and mental health.

Engaging in this peaceful practice outside is a terrific way to incorporate mindfulness and fitness into your day, all while enjoying the local scenery. In this article, we’ll show you some of the best places to practice outdoor yoga in the Houston area.

Discovery Green Hatha Yoga

The Discovery Green Conservancy is a non-profit organization that manages Houston’s spectacular 11.78-acre urban park. The organization relies on the donations of its visitors and other individuals to maintain and fund the park. The park hosts over 600 free events for locals each year.

Discovery Green’s Hatha yoga class is held every Saturday morning on the Sarofim Picnic Lawn by the Hess patio deck. Hatha yoga focuses on static movements and holding poses for extended periods, increasing your flexibility. This beginner class is designed for enhanced awareness and a strong, healthy body. Classes are free, but registration is required on-site. You must bring a mat, water, and a towel.

Yoga 4 Change USA

If you’re looking to improve your health and make a difference in the world, Yoga 4 Change USA offers an hour of donation-based yoga and mindfulness. The class is held at the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park, with half of all proceeds donated directly to various local charities.

It is highly recommended that you bring water, a towel, and a mat, although limited mats are provided for public use. It also offers local all-natural organic juice, by Foodie by Nature, for $8 each. This is a family-friendly event, so bring your pets and kids for some energizing yoga in the park.

Houston Yoga & Ayurveda Ashram

Located on the outskirts of Houston in Cypress, Texas, Houston Yoga & Ayurveda (HYA) is the perfect place to escape the city and experience therapeutic yoga. The HYA is the only studio accredited to practice therapeutic yoga in the Houston area, meaning classes are personalized to fit your style. When weather permits, class is routinely held on the outdoor patio, with beautiful views of the surrounding forest and wildlife.

The HYA teaches an authentic style of yoga based on ancient practices from India. This variation of yoga is designed to help you connect with your body and includes various breathing and meditation techniques. You must bring your mat, blanket, and block straps, although equipment can be purchased on-site. Membership is required, starting at $133 per month.

Yoga @ Uptown Park

Every Sunday morning, YogaSix West University hosts a pop-up class in the courtyard of Uptown Park. This class introduces you to the practice of Vinyasa flow, a type of yoga that focuses on bringing balance to your body through breath and movement. Through thoughtful movement, Vinyasa yoga can enhance your core stability and improve mobility and range of motion.

Tickets start at $5, with a voucher available for a free class in the YogaSix studio. It is recommended that you bring a towel, mat, and water. If you don’t have a mat, you may text ahead, and one will be provided for you.

The Preserve

The Preserve is a nature-inspired fitness club featuring high-end architecture and a variety of health and fitness offerings. This facility is exclusively for members, with access to the city’s best personal trainers and yoga instructors. Memberships start at $247 per month and include numerous benefits, including unlimited classes.

One of their most popular classes is fusion yoga, designed to complement and improve the skills of yoga and mat Pilates. It also adds a little heat to your exercises to tone and lengthen muscles, leaving you feeling more energetic and motivated. Yoga is routinely held in the tranquil outdoor space when the heat index is between 70 and 95 degrees. Mats, water, and towels will be provided for you, but you’re free to bring your own.

  • Hours: 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

We Thrive Yoga

The We Thrive community is full of passionate individuals dedicated to positively impacting the world. Regardless of your skill level, this studio offers a holistic approach to every class, with extended hours for socializing and making meaningful connections. They also have ice baths and red-light therapy available for ultimate relaxation.

This small yoga sanctuary teaches power Vinyasa in the peaceful garden and open-air studio. Classes are built on the pillars of Baptiste Yoga: breath, focus, foundation, heat, and flow. Prices start at $20 for a drop-in with various options for packages and memberships. Signing up online is required before classes. Be sure to bring everything you need for practice, including your mat, towel, block, strap, and water bottle.
