Move Beyond Worry, Stress & Racing Thoughts

Everyone feels anxious some of the time. When it is persistent, however, that’s a sign it’s time to treat your anxiety.

Persistent anxiety can affect your ability to enjoy life. You might feel a sense of consistent worry just beneath the surface of your thoughts, making it impossible for you to focus. Your thoughts might race so quickly that you feel as though your head will explode.

Or, you may find yourself obsessing over a small thing and blowing it out of proportion in your mind, imagining the worst-case scenario. Perhaps you feel tired and restless throughout the day.

You might experience physical symptoms such as stomach pain, muscle tension, or headaches. You may have sought out medical advice, with no diagnosis or treatment for your symptoms.

Maybe your feelings of stress and worry have escalated, leading you to think you might be dying. Perhaps you’ve even gone to the emergency room during period of panic. These feelings can be painful, frustrating or even frightening to live with.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Understanding Different Types of Anxiety

Therapy for anxiety disorders involves treating one of the following types of anxiety:

  • Stress – occurs in response to change. Persistent stress doesn’t allow your body to recover and can lead to physical illness, burnout, anxiety or depression.
  • Generalized Anxiety – involves persistent worry that preoccupies the mind making it difficult to relax. You might feel as if your mind is constantly moving from one worry to the next, expecting the worst.
  • Anxiety/Panic Attacks – involve an intense physical experience of terror. Symptoms often include rapid heartbeat, heart palpitations, throat tightening, chest pain, increased heart rate, difficulty breathing and fear of dying.
  • Social Anxiety – involves intense fear of judgment by others that can make it difficult to go out in public, attend social events, give presentations or speak up at work.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress – may occur after experiencing a trauma such as disaster, rape, abuse, bullying, war, accident, or intense shame. Symptoms include re-experiencing the trauma physically or mentally and avoiding things related to the experience. Take our PTSD test.
  • Trauma – any experience of feeling unsafe physically or emotionally, whether in childhood or adulthood can lead to trauma symptoms such as feelings of dread, fear, avoidance, emotional reactivity, hypervigilance, distrusting others and numbness.
  • Obsessions & Compulsions – persistent, unwanted, uncontrollable thoughts (obsessions) or behaviors/rituals (compulsions) to get rid of unwanted thoughts or feelings.  Take our OCD test to find out the severity of your symptoms.
  • Specific Phobias – fear of driving, flying, heights, small spaces, needles, loud noises or insects, health anxiety are examples of specific fears that can contribute to high anxiety, even fainting.

Anxiety Affects People from Every Walk of Life

Many people struggle with anxiety at different levels of intensity. Some people have felt anxious all of their lives. Others feel a period of anxiety during and/or after a significant life transition, such as a divorce, the death of a loved one, a career change, or a diagnosis of illness or change in health conditions.

And, sometimes it can be extremely difficult to identify what is triggering anxiety on your own. Anxiety can attach itself to something seemingly unrelated from the stressor.

For example, you may be anxious about the beginning of a new job and begin to worry obsessively about a mole on your arm. Your anxiety might be trying to tell you something is out of balance in your life.

Sometimes, heightened anxiety can be a result of trauma, even trauma that occurred several years in the past. Often, however, there is no clear trigger and it can be frustrating to not know what is going on.

Anxiety counseling can help you cope with your anxiety symptoms and find solutions to alleviate your pain.

With Anxiety Treatment, You Can Feel Empowered and Present Again

Anxiety Counseling Services FAQ's

woman helped by an anxiety therapist relaxing 77008
At Eddins Counseling Group, we provide outpatient treatment via talk therapy for anxiety. Our therapists diagnose anxiety and provide effective, research-based treatments and therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy or exposure therapy for OCD.

Therapy, medication or a combination is highly effective in treating anxiety disorders.

We do not provide antianxiety medication however. Your therapist can collaborate with your health care provider or provide a referral option for medication management if needed.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on helping your change your thoughts and behavior. Often our thoughts contribute to our perspective and the way we feel. Behaviors, such as compulsions, get in the way of living life with ease and contribute to stress. Working on both through CBT can help you break free from dynamics that are contributing to anxiety.

CBT therapy for anxiety is an effective treatment for anxiety disorders. Research has shown multiple times that it works to reduce all types of anxiety including panic attacks.

Other forms of behavioral and cognitive therapies such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy are also effective. Working with a CBT therapist can help you find relief from symptoms of anxiety, stress, and worry.

Trauma-Informed Therapies

Some anxiety and depression symptoms stem from traumatic experiences. Your therapist can help to determine if you are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can occur post-trauma and have debilitating, residual effects on well-being. If you have experienced a major trauma or a period of ongoing abuse or neglect, you may be in a constantly hyper-anxious state. We also offer EMDR therapy, and other forms of trauma therapy, which are incredibly effective in helping people get unstuck and find mental, physical, and emotional release from anxiety and PTSD.

Insomnia Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia can teach you how to sleep again. CBT insomnia therapy helps you sleep better, without medication. Getting enough sleep can have a big impact on anxiety symptoms. Helping both your mind and body to be more relaxed.

Anxiety is a normal part of human life and is beneficial when it is intermittent. For some however, it can become chronic or interfere with daily life. Chronic anxiety or irrational worry typically persists without treatment.

There are many factors that contribute to anxiety symptoms. Trauma, genetics, other mental health / medical conditions and personality type are risk factors that increase your risk of developing an anxiety disorder. Life stressors also contribute to developing anxiety symptoms. While the symptoms may come and go, it can be beneficial to learn coping skills to manage anxiety symptoms when they arise.

Over time, anxiety can become a learned response to triggers in your life. Without treatment, the pattern of thoughts and behaviors that contribute to anxiety can become habitual. Habits cause anxiety. This creates a cycle that maintains anxiety symptoms.

People with anxiety attacks may find the symptoms of an anxiety or panic disorder unbearable without some form of treatment.

Anxiety treatment teaches you new ways of thinking, feeling and responding to stress and anxiety triggers, which reduces anxiety symptoms over time. Therapy also helps you know how to manage anxiety symptoms when they surface, reducing the intensity and duration of anxiety symptoms.

The good news is that anxiety is highly treatable.

We believe that therapy is an investment in your emotional, physical, and mental well-being. You are in charge of your own therapy and can tailor your treatment to your needs and schedule. It is very important to understand that treatments for anxiety disorders do not work instantly. Your therapist will discuss a treatment plan with you based on your unique anxiety disorder symptoms and you will be a collaborative part of the process.

Ultimately, investing in your emotional health impacts your physical health, your career and your relationships. Investing in yourself not only helps you feel better sooner, it also protects the areas of your life that can be impacted when you’re not feeling well. When you begin to feel less anxious or understand the root of your anxieties, it can make a difference in your life.

You might find the courage or confidence to pursue the things that really matter to you.

Therapy sessions are typically scheduled once per week until your anxiety symptoms decrease and you have skills to cope with anxiety more effectively between sessions. Successful mental health treatment outcomes are approximately 12 sessions on average.

You can go through therapy at your own pace.
Therapy can help you work free of the control anxiety has over your life so you can begin to live with confidence and calmness again. Sometimes, this might mean recognizing areas of your life or coping mechanisms that are no longer working for you.

What to expect in anxiety therapy:

When you start therapy, your therapist will help you identify grounding and relaxation techniques that work for you to feel safe and relax your body. For some, the signs of anxiety are muscle tension in tight shoulders or gastrointestinal issues. Progressive muscle relaxation can help you release tension. Deep breathing can also help as we tend to hold our breath when anxious.

Next, you may review lifestyle changes that can reduce anxiety symptoms. For example, caffeine can increase anxiety and panic symptoms. Skipping meals increases the release of stress hormones and anxiety. Alcohol can block the serotonin you need in your brain to prevent anxious, ruminating thoughts. Increased salt increases blood pressure leading your heart to work harder.

Your therapist will help you address limiting beliefs and negative thinking, learn stress management techniques, cope with difficult emotions and anxious or negative thoughts and help you grow at a deeper level. This might include healing the pain inside.

Your therapist will work with you gently and compassionately to move through any difficulties that might arise.

If you are suffering from PTSD-related anxiety, you may be worried about the pain of discussing traumatic events. EMDR therapy can be an effective method through which you can find resolution and healing from trauma and posttraumatic stress. In anxiety treatment sessions, you can learn tools to manage the anxiety symptoms, such as distressing thoughts and physical discomfort, that may be caused by your trauma.

If you have supportive friends and family, you may wonder how a stranger can help you. But, the trained, skilled anxiety therapists at Eddins Counseling Group can offer you long-term solutions to your worries and anxiety instead of just temporary relief. We can help you identify the triggers of your anxiety and teach you coping skills to manage them on your own. Several of our therapists specialize in treating anxiety specifically. They understand why your body is responding the way it is and how to help you cope.

Talking can lead to reassurance and create some relief. But, it’s important to develop coping skills and stress management techniques to manage your emotions for times when your friends and family might not be available. For example, if you begin to feel symptoms of panic at 3 a.m., your loved ones might not answer the phone.

Anxiety treatment can empower you to find your own calm, which can help with other challenges you might face in the future as well.

Online counseling for anxiety is conducted from the privacy of your home or office through a secure video connection. You will still work with licensed professional mental health counselors, just in an environment convenient to you! The only requirement is for you to have stable internet access on an electronic device.
